Ta se sin fear.

That guy duffy (whose =huge= wages i pay with my tax) is a lowlife. Feigned concern for all types of nutters, together with accepting every third callers demand to solve every problem with cutting back on government cars and jet

Interesting tidbit there regarding Half Life...

The ending is very good, but is it enough to save the film? I would say no. Hopefully some day we will be treated to a real top-drawer movie that takes similar risks with its ending.

I absolutely agree, although I would be a bit stronger about the ending. I have been recommending this film to friends - people I like and whose opinions I value- warning them that the run-of-the-mill dirge that makes up the first 95% of the movie is just a set-up for one of the most amazing endings of the last 10 years.

Oh, and the film is also of note to gamers, since it was the inspiration for the story of the original Half Life.

Having visited the URL in question for research purposes - as a favour, you understand - your blog doesn't seem to be linked from there any more. Which is a shame I suppose, in some ways.

By in large, I'd agree with your sentiments. The movie pays little more than lip-service to the thesis put forward by the book that the vampires are perhaps just as human as Neville himself. The trapping of Neville and the later calculated attack on his jeep only scratch the surface of the kinds of torment afflicted on Neville in the novel.

While that doesn't make it a bad movie, it does make those who are au-fait with the source material a little puzzled. The labotomy of the real meat of the book, and the shoe-horning in of Bob Marley references and so on just smack of change for change's sake.

In the movie, the antagonists are CGI ghouls, devoid of personality, language or interest. They don’t toy with Neville’s emotions, nor do they fear him. They’re cannon fodder.

There's a moment around the end of the second act, where they manage to 'trap' Neville, using 'Fred' and the same wire trick as Neville had used to capture one of the ghouls. This was where I thought the film got most unnerving - it implied the ghouls had an intelligence and were perhaps even developing relationships, which would eventually lead to a society, just like in the book. But the filmmakers don't capitalize on this at all. Which is a shame, because it would have made it a much more interesting film.

Haven't seen the film yet, but I think that director David Slade was considerably accomplished, as he previously directed the very tense Hard Candy.

Japan offers a 1 year working visa to Irish people. Contact the Irish Embassy, they're a helpful bunch. They've got a website too. Also, google the JET programme, that's what I'm working with at the moment, and I love it.
